Tips for Getting Your Hot Tub Ready for Winter
- Clear a path: The first thing you can do to keep your hot tub ready to use in the winter is to keep a clear path. Clearing snow, laying down salt, and preventing ice are all going to make using your hot tub much easier.
- Cover your hot tub: Keeping your hot tub covered is essential for a quality winter hot tub experience. Ideally, your hot tub has an insulated cover. Whenever your hot tub isn’t in use it’s incredibly important to use the cover. A good cover keeps the cold out, which not only keeps your hot tub energy efficient, it also protects its key (and potentially expensive) components!
- Avoid using air jets: Unfortunately, using your hot tub’s jets during the winter may not be the best idea. At least using your hot tub’s air jets is probably not the best idea. Air jets work by pulling outside air through small holes in the jet’s outlet. They’re often more gentle than water jets and most hot tubs today have at least some air jets in them. Pulling freezing cold air directly into your hot tub is going to bring down the water temperature and make your hot tub work a lot harder than it needs to.
- Make sure the temperature is just right: When it’s cold out, it can be tempting to turn up the heat to warm up as quickly as possible. Most hot tubs will keep the water temperature around 100°F to 102°F, which is exactly where you want it. Some models may allow the temperature to be cranked up but most people probably won’t enjoy the rapid temperature change that comes from stepping out of near freezing weather into hot water.
- Keep towels warm and dry: One way to enhance your hot tub experience is to keep your towel warm and dry for after your soak. Which can be pretty tricky during the winter. One option is to invest in a towel warmer. While your hot tub can maintain water temperature, your body temperature can drop within moments once you step out into frigid air. You can also use an insulated bag with some hand warmers inside to keep your towels nice and toasty if you’re looking for something a little more portable.
